When we compare, we look for how two things are alike. When we contrast, we look for how they are different. Writers use these clues to help us understand their ideas.
A Venn diagram is a great tool for this. It has two overlapping circles. The middle part shows how things are the same, while the outer parts show their differences.
Look for clue words in the text. Words like 'both', 'also', and 'like' show things are alike. Words like 'but', 'unlike', and 'however' show they are different.
Read this short paragraph, then compare and contrast the two characters: "Maya and Leo love art. Maya likes to paint quiet forests with watercolors. However, Leo prefers to build loud, bright sculptures out of recycled plastic bottles."
- Find the characters first. Here, the text is about Maya and Leo.
- Look for what they have in common. The text says they both 'love art.' This is a similarity.
- Look for clue words that show differences. The word 'however' tells us a change is coming.
- Find the differences. Maya uses watercolors to make quiet forest paintings. Leo uses plastic bottles to make loud, bright sculptures.
- Write down your final comparison. Both characters love art. But Maya makes quiet paintings, while Leo makes loud, bright sculptures.
