When you read, you can guess what will happen next. This is called making a prediction. You use clues from the story and what you already know to make your guess.
Good readers also look at text features. These are things like book covers, titles, and pictures. They help you confirm if your guess was right, or correct it if you were wrong.
We also use the genre, or type of story, to help us. If a story is a mystery, we can predict there will be a puzzle to solve. We update our predictions as we get new clues.
Read this short passage: 'The sky turned dark gray. Strong winds started to bend the tree branches. Maya looked at the cover of her book, which showed a lightning bolt. She grabbed her raincoat.' Let's model how to make and confirm a prediction.
- Look at the text features. The cover has a lightning bolt. This is a big clue about the weather.
- Look at the story clues. The sky is dark gray, the wind is strong, and Maya grabs her raincoat.
- Think about the genre. This feels like a realistic adventure story where weather might cause a problem.
- Make a prediction. You can predict that a big rainstorm or thunderstorm is about to start.
- Confirm your prediction. Since Maya grabbed her raincoat, it confirms she also expects rain very soon.
