Read this sentence: 'The cold wind howled like a lonely wolf, freezing our cheeks.' Explain how the author uses imagery and simile here to describe the setting.
- First, look for a comparison using 'like' or 'as'. We find 'howled like a lonely wolf'. This is a simile.
- Next, analyze the simile. A wolf's howl is loud, wild, and a bit scary. This tells us the wind is very strong and makes a loud, spooky sound.
- Then, look for sensory words that create imagery. The words 'cold wind' and 'freezing our cheeks' appeal to our sense of touch.
- Finally, combine these ideas. The author uses the spooky simile and the icy touch imagery to make us feel how cold, harsh, and lonely the weather is.
