Hi there! I am Studyfin, your learning helper. Today, we will learn how to be super active listeners!
Listening is more than just hearing sounds. Active listening means using your ears, eyes, and brain to understand a message. We look for clues in what people say and how they act.
People send messages with their voices and their bodies. A smile tells us they are happy. Crossed arms might mean they feel closed off. We call these non-verbal clues.
Active listeners also ask great questions. If you do not understand, you can ask for help. This shows the speaker that you care about their words.
Let us practice active listening. Imagine your friend Leo sighs, looks down at the floor, and says, 'I guess we can play your game today.' How does Leo actually feel, and what should you do?
- Look at Leo's body language. He sighed and looked down. These are non-verbal clues that show he is sad or disappointed.
- Listen to his tone of voice. He said 'I guess,' which sounds like he is just giving in, not excited.
- Compare his words to his actions. His words say 'yes,' but his body says 'no.'
- Ask a caring question. You can say: 'You seem a bit sad, Leo. Is there a different game you want to play instead?'
- Now, you have successfully interpreted his message and asked a great question!
