Poetry is a special kind of writing. It uses short lines, rhythm, and feelings to share ideas. Unlike normal stories, poems do not have to fill the whole page.
Poetry is built with lines and stanzas. A line is just a single row of words. A stanza is a group of lines that sit together, like a paragraph in a story.
Many poems use rhyme to sound like music. Rhyming words have the same ending sound, like 'cat' and 'hat'. This makes the poem fun to read out loud!
✏️ Worked example
Look at this short poem: 'The wind began to blow, (Line 1) And soft fell the white snow.' (Line 2) Find the rhyming words and explain how they work.
- First, look at the end of each line to find the last words.
- The last word of Line 1 is 'blow'.
- The last word of Line 2 is 'snow'.
- Say 'blow' and 'snow' out loud to hear their ending sounds.
- Both words end with the 'oh' sound, so they rhyme!
- These two lines together make a complete rhyming pair.
