Hi there! I am Studyfin, and today we will learn about reading fluency. It is all about how we sound when we read!
Reading fluency means reading out loud smoothly. It sounds just like you are talking to a friend. You do not read too fast or too slow.
When we read fluently, we group words together. We do not read word... by... word. We group them into short phrases to help the story make sense.
We also use expression! This means we change our voice for punctuation. We stop at periods, pause at commas, and sound excited for exclamation points!
✏️ Worked example
Let us practice reading this sentence with good fluency: "Look out, the cup is falling!"
- First, look at the whole sentence. Spot the punctuation marks. I see a comma and an exclamation point.
- Next, group the words into two short parts: "Look out" and "the cup is falling."
- Now, read the first part and pause slightly at the comma: "Look out,"
- Finally, read the second part with excitement because of the exclamation point: "the cup is falling!"
- Put it all together smoothly: "Look out, [pause] the cup is falling!"
