Every word has a pattern. When we learn these patterns, spelling becomes much easier. We can use what we know about sounds to spell new words.
Let us look at the silent 'e' pattern. When a word ends with 'e', it makes the middle vowel say its own name. For example, 'cap' becomes 'cape'.
Now, let us compare spelling patterns when we add endings. When a word ends in a consonant and 'y', we change 'y' to 'i' before adding 'es'. For example, 'baby' becomes 'babies'.

How do we change the word 'try' into 'tries' using our spelling rules?
- Look at the base word: 'try'. It ends with a consonant 'r' followed by the letter 'y'.
- Recall our rule: when a word ends in a consonant and 'y', we must change 'y' to 'i'.
- Drop the 'y' from the end of 'try' to get 'tr-'.
- Add the letters 'i', 'e', and 's' to the end.
- Combine them to spell the final word: 'tries'!
