Summarizing

Grade 5 · English Language Arts · Free lesson

Hi there! I am Studyfin, your learning buddy. Let's learn how to summarize stories in our own words!

A summary is a short retelling of a story. It only includes the most important parts. We leave out small details to keep it quick.

education

To write a great summary, we must keep the logical order of the story. This means we tell the events in the same order they happened: beginning, middle, and end.

Beginning Middle End

When we summarize, we also paraphrase. Paraphrasing means putting the author's ideas into our own words. This shows that we truly understand what we read.

✏️ Worked example

Read this short story: 'Leo the lion lived in a grassy valley. One day, a heavy storm flooded his home. Leo had to climb up a tall, rocky mountain to stay safe. Finally, the storm passed, and Leo safely returned to his dry valley.' Now, let's write a summary together.

  1. Find the main character and the starting setup. Here, we meet Leo the lion living in a grassy valley.
  2. Identify the big problem. The storm floods his home, which is a big change.
  3. See how the character solves the problem. Leo climbs a rocky mountain to stay safe.
  4. Find the ending. The storm ends, and Leo returns home safely.
  5. Put it all together in order: 'Leo's valley home flooded during a storm, so he climbed a mountain for safety until he could return home.'
