Writing paragraphs

Grade 5 · English Language Arts · Free lesson

Hi there! I am Studyfin, your friendly tutor. Let's learn how to write a focused and organized paragraph today!

A good paragraph is like a delicious burger. It needs a top bun, yummy fillings, and a bottom bun to hold it all together.

The top bun is your topic sentence. It tells the reader the main idea of your paragraph. It keeps your writing focused on one big thought.

Topic Sentence (Top Bun)

The fillings are your supporting details. They give facts, examples, or steps that explain your main idea. Each detail must connect back to your topic sentence.

Detail 1: Facts Detail 2: Examples

The bottom bun is your concluding sentence. It wraps up your thoughts and repeats the main idea in a fresh, new way so the paragraph feels complete.

Conclusion (Bottom Bun)
✏️ Worked example

Let's organize a paragraph about why dogs make great pets. We need to make sure the ideas flow logically and stay focused on this one topic.

  1. First, we write our topic sentence. This is our top bun: 'Dogs make wonderful household pets for families.'
  2. Next, we add our first supporting detail: 'First, dogs are very loyal and always welcome you home with excitement.'
  3. Then, we add a second supporting detail to build our paragraph: 'Also, playing with a dog keeps you active and healthy.'
  4. Now, we check for focus. If we wrote 'Cats like to sleep all day,' we would delete it because it is not about dogs.
  5. Finally, we write our concluding sentence to wrap it up: 'In conclusion, dogs bring joy and active fun to any home.'
