Every word in a sentence has a job to do. We call these jobs parts of speech. When we edit our writing, we check if we used nouns, verbs, and adjectives correctly.
Nouns name a person, place, thing, or idea. Verbs show the action in the sentence. Adjectives describe nouns to make our writing colorful and clear.
When we edit, we make sure words are used in the right way. For example, we cannot use an adjective where a verb should be, or the sentence will not make sense.
✏️ Worked example
Let's edit this draft sentence: 'The happy student quick finished the test.' How can we fix it using standard English conventions?
- Read the sentence carefully to find any parts of speech used incorrectly. Look at 'quick finished'.
- Identify the word 'finished' as a verb. It tells us what action the student did.
- Identify the word 'quick'. 'Quick' is an adjective, which should only describe nouns.
- Change the adjective 'quick' to the adverb 'quickly' so it correctly describes the action verb 'finished'.
- Read the new sentence: 'The happy student quickly finished the test.' It is now correct!
