When you speak in front of others, you need to use three main tools. These are eye contact, speaking rate, and volume. Eye contact means looking at your audience to connect with them. Speaking rate is how fast or slow you talk, and volume is how loud you are.
A good speaking rate keeps your audience interested. If you speak too fast, people cannot understand you. If you speak too slow, they might get bored. Practice changing your speed to match your message!
When you share a critique of a book or movie, you evaluate its parts. You tell your audience what worked well and what did not. Doing this out loud helps people decide if they want to read or watch it themselves.
Let us practice giving a critique of a movie. Imagine you are presenting a review of a film to your classmates. How do you plan your critique and deliver it with good eye contact, speaking rate, and volume?
- First, write down your main points. Decide if you liked the movie and think of two reasons why.
- Next, practice your delivery in front of a mirror. Look at yourself in the eyes to build confidence.
- Then, speak at a calm pace. Count to two silently at the end of each sentence to control your rate.
- After that, project your voice to the back of the room. Speak loud enough so everyone can hear you clearly.
- Finally, stand tall and smile. Present your review with energy and connect with your audience.
