Hi there! I am Studyfin, your friendly tutor. Today, we will learn how to find the hidden messages and symbols inside a story!
A theme is the big life lesson of a story. It is not just one word like 'friendship.' Instead, it is a full statement about life, like 'true friends support each other during hard times.' Stories can have more than one theme.

A symbol is an object, person, or color that stands for a big idea. For example, a bright yellow sun can stand for hope. When you see a symbol repeat in a story, it often points you directly to the theme!
To find multiple themes, look at how different characters solve their problems. If one character learns to speak up, the theme might be about courage. If another character learns to share, a second theme might be about generosity.
Read this short story: 'Maya found a withered plant in her new backyard. Her brother said to throw it away, but she watered it daily. Slowly, green leaves grew. At the same time, Maya worked hard on her difficult math homework. By winter, the plant was strong, and Maya passed her math test.' Let us find two themes using the plant as a symbol.
- Step 1: Identify the symbol. The plant starts withered but grows green and strong with daily care. This plant is a symbol of growth and hard work.
- Step 2: Connect the symbol to Maya's first goal (the plant). Maya did not give up on the plant. This shows Theme 1: 'Patience and care can bring hope to dying things.'
- Step 3: Connect the symbol to Maya's second goal (math). Maya worked hard on her math homework every day, just like watering the plant. This shows Theme 2: 'Steady effort leads to success in difficult tasks.'
- Step 4: Combine your evidence. The plant's growth matches Maya's math success. Both prove that daily effort leads to beautiful results.
