A great paragraph acts like a sandwich. It needs a top bun to hold it together, a tasty filling in the middle, and a bottom bun to finish it off.
The top bun is your topic sentence. It tells the reader your main idea. Every other sentence in the paragraph must stick to this one idea to keep your writing focused.
The filling is made of supporting details. These are facts, examples, or explanations that prove your main idea. A good paragraph usually has two or three detail sentences.
Finally, the bottom bun is your concluding sentence. It wraps up your thoughts. It reminds the reader of your main point using different words.
Let's build a focused paragraph about why honeybees are important. We need to organize our ideas so they flow smoothly and stay on topic.
- First, write a clear topic sentence: 'Honeybees play a vital role in growing the food we eat.' This sets our main focus.
- Next, add a supporting detail that explains the topic: 'As they fly from flower to flower, they move pollen.' This shows how they help plants.
- Add a second supporting detail for more strength: 'This pollen allows plants to grow fruits, vegetables, and seeds.'
- Check for focus. If we added a sentence about honeybee stings, we would remove it because it does not fit our topic of growing food.
- Finally, write a concluding sentence to wrap it up: 'Without these busy insects, our dinner plates would be very empty.'
