When we read, we often look at two different texts on the same topic. Comparing means finding how they are alike, while contrasting means finding how they are different.
Let's look at how two authors might write about the same topic. One author might give us facts using a chart, while another author might tell a personal story about the very same event.
To compare texts, we look at their main ideas, facts, and structure. We look for shared topics, but we also look for differences in how the authors share their information.
Read these two short passages about honeybees. Then, compare and contrast them by identifying one similarity and one difference. Passage 1: 'Honeybees are amazing insects. They live in large groups called colonies. A single hive can hold up to 60,000 bees working together.' Passage 2: 'I stood still as a honeybee buzzed near my face. These helpful insects live together in busy hives, where they make sweet honey.'
- Find the topic of both passages. Both texts are talking about honeybees.
- Look for details that are the same. Both passages mention that honeybees live together in groups or hives.
- Look for details that are different. Passage 1 gives exact numbers, like '60,000 bees'. Passage 2 uses a personal story style, mentioning 'I stood still'.
- Write your final response. State clearly that both texts show bees live in groups, but Passage 1 uses facts while Passage 2 uses a personal story.
