A play is a story written to be performed by actors on a stage. Unlike normal stories, plays do not have a narrator telling you everything. Instead, we learn about the characters through what they say and how they move.
Dialogue is the spoken conversation between characters in a play. Playwrights use dialogue to show a character's personality, feelings, and relationships without just telling us directly.
Staging includes the stage directions written in parentheses or italics. These words tell the actors where to walk, how to stand, or what facial expressions to make, which helps build their character.
Read this short script and analyze how the playwright develops the character of Leo using both dialogue and staging: LEO (clutching his notebook tightly to his chest): I... I don't think my poem is ready for the show, Ms. Gable. (He takes a slow step backward toward the exit.)
- Look at the staging directions in the parentheses: 'clutching his notebook tightly to his chest'. This physical action shows that Leo is feeling defensive, protective, and very nervous about his work.
- Look at the dialogue: 'I... I don't think my poem is ready'. The repetition of 'I...' and the hesitation show he is insecure and lacks confidence in his writing.
- Look at the second staging direction: 'takes a slow step backward toward the exit'. This movement reveals his urge to escape the situation because of his fear.
- Combine these clues to explain Leo's character: The playwright uses defensive staging and hesitant dialogue to show that Leo is a shy, anxious student who is deeply afraid of sharing his creative work with others.
