When you summarize a text, you explain the main ideas in your own words. A good summary is much shorter than the original text and keeps the same logical order.
To write a great summary, you must leave out small details and focus only on the big picture. Think of it like zooming out with a camera to see the whole landscape instead of just one flower.
Paraphrasing means rewriting a sentence using different words but keeping the exact same meaning. We must be careful not to change the author's original facts or message when we paraphrase.
Read this paragraph and write a summary that maintains the logical order and meaning: "Honeybees are famous for making sweet honey. To do this, they first fly from flower to flower to collect sugary nectar. Next, they carry the nectar back to their hive in a special honey stomach. Finally, the bees work together in the hive to turn the nectar into honey and store it in honeycomb cells."
- Find the main topic. Here, the text explains the step-by-step process of how honeybees make honey.
- Identify the key steps in order. Step 1: Collect nectar. Step 2: Carry nectar to the hive. Step 3: Turn nectar into honey together.
- Leave out extra details. We do not need to mention 'sugary nectar', 'special honey stomach', or 'honeycomb cells.'
- Draft the summary in your own words. Keep the steps in the same order: 'Honeybees make honey by first gathering nectar from flowers. Then, they bring it back to their hive. Last, the bees work as a team to turn the nectar into sweet honey.'
