Every great story has a deeper meaning. A theme is the big life lesson or message the author wants us to learn. A single story can even have multiple themes, like how working together brings success, and how true friendship requires trust.
Authors often use symbols to show these themes. A symbol is a physical object that stands for a big, abstract idea. For example, a tiny green sprout might stand for hope or a fresh new beginning.
To find a theme, we must look at text evidence. We look at what the characters say, how they act, and how they solve their problems. If a character shares their food and gets a loyal friend, the text evidence points to kindness as a theme.
Read this short story, find two different themes, and explain the symbols using text evidence: "Maya carried a heavy, rusty iron key in her pocket. It belonged to her grandfather's old, locked garden. Everyone told her the garden was dead, but Maya believed she could bring it back. She worked in the dirt every day after school. Eventually, bright yellow marigolds bloomed, and the rusted key finally turned the old lock smoothly."
- Identify the first theme by looking at Maya's actions. She works hard every day even when others doubt her. This text evidence shows that hard work and persistence lead to success.
- Identify the second theme by looking at the garden. It goes from being 'dead' to blooming. This shows a theme of hope and renewal.
- Analyze the first symbol. The rusty iron key represents the potential or opportunity that Maya holds in her hands.
- Analyze the second symbol. The blooming marigolds represent the beautiful results of patience, care, and dedication.
