When you read, you often find different texts about the same topic. To compare means to find how they are alike. To contrast means to find how they are different.
We can use a Venn diagram to organize our thoughts. The overlapping middle section shows what both texts share, while the outer circles show what makes each text unique.
Authors often have different purposes or viewpoints. One author might write to inform you with facts, while another might write to persuade you to take action on the same issue.
Compare and contrast these two short passages about wolves: Passage 1: 'Wolves live and hunt in family groups called packs. A pack usually has an alpha pair and their offspring. They work together to hunt large prey.' Passage 2: 'We must protect wolves because they keep nature balanced. Without these beautiful predators, deer herds grow too large and ruin the forest plants.'
- Identify the shared topic. Both passages are writing about wolves and how they interact with their environment.
- Analyze Passage 1. The author uses facts to explain wolf pack structure. The purpose is strictly to inform.
- Analyze Passage 2. The author uses emotional words like 'must protect' and 'beautiful.' The purpose is to persuade you to protect them.
- Compare the texts. Both texts agree that wolves work in groups or affect other animals in nature.
- Contrast the texts. Passage 1 focuses on scientific facts about packs. Passage 2 focuses on an opinion about protecting nature's balance.
