Many English words are built from ancient Greek and Latin roots. By learning these roots, you can figure out the meaning of new words without even looking them up.
A prefix is a word part added to the beginning of a root word. For example, the prefix 'tele-' means 'far away', which changes how we understand the root it attaches to.
A suffix is added to the end of a root word. Suffixes often change the word's part of speech, like turning the action verb 'create' into the naming noun 'creation'.

Determine the meaning of the word 'audiology' by analyzing its Greek or Latin root and suffix.
Identify the root word: Look at the first part of the word, 'audi-'. From your knowledge of related words like 'audio' or 'auditorium', this Latin root means 'to hear'.
Identify the suffix: Look at the ending, '-ology'. This Greek suffix means 'the study of' something.
Combine the meanings: Put 'hear' and 'the study of' together.
Determine the final usage: 'Audiology' is the scientific study of hearing and related disorders.
