Rhythm is the beat of a poem. Just like in your favorite song, some syllables are loud and strong, while others are soft. When we read a poem aloud, these patterns of beats make the words flow smoothly.
Rhyme is another tool poets use. Rhyme happens when two words end with the same sound, like 'cat' and 'hat'. Many poems use a rhyme scheme, which is a pattern of rhyming words at the ends of the lines.
Let's analyze a short stanza from a poem. We want to find its rhyme scheme and see how the poet connects ideas through rhyming words. Read this stanza: Line 1: The wind began to blow and roar, Line 2: It swept the leaves across the floor, Line 3: The dark clouds gathered in the sky, Line 4: As birds flew up so very high.
- Look at the last word of Line 1: 'roar'. Since this is our first sound, we label it with the letter 'A'.
- Look at the last word of Line 2: 'floor'. Compare it to 'roar'. They rhyme! Because they share the same sound, we also label Line 2 with the letter 'A'.
- Look at the last word of Line 3: 'sky'. This sound is different from 'roar' and 'floor'. We label this new sound with the next letter, 'B'.
- Look at the last word of Line 4: 'high'. Compare it to 'sky'. They rhyme! So, we label Line 4 with the letter 'B'.
- Combine the letters to find the pattern. The rhyme scheme for this stanza is AABB. This pattern tells us that the first two lines pair up, and the last two lines pair up.
