Every story has a narrator who tells the tale. The narrator's point of view is the lens we look through, and it changes what details we get to see.
First-person point of view uses 'I' and 'me' to put you inside one character's head. Third-person uses 'he', 'she', or 'they' to look at characters from the outside.
When authors use multiple points of view, they let different characters narrate different chapters. This helps us analyze how two people can experience the exact same event differently.
Read this short scene and analyze how the two different characters view the sudden thunderstorm. Character A (The Farmer): "Finally! The dark clouds rolled in, and the sweet smell of rain filled the air. My dry crops would survive." Character B (The Camper): "The sky turned pitch black. Wind whipped my tent, ripping the stakes right out of the mud. We were trapped."
- Identify the main event: A sudden summer thunderstorm begins.
- Analyze Character A's perspective: The farmer views the storm as a savior because his crops need water to live.
- Analyze Character B's perspective: The camper views the storm as a dangerous threat because it ruins their shelter.
- Compare and explain: The author uses these two points of view to show that a single event is not simply 'good' or 'bad.' It all depends on how it affects each character's situation.
