To find the theme, we must analyze how characters change during key events. When a character overcomes a hard challenge, their actions reveal the author's message.
Read this short passage, then follow the steps to analyze how the theme develops through the characters and symbols: "Maya stared at the dry, dusty soil in her backyard. Her grandmother had given her a single, tiny seed before moving away. Everyone told Maya nothing would grow in the dry dirt. Still, Maya watered it every single day. After weeks of heat, a tiny green sprout broke through the soil."
- Identify the main character and her primary action. Maya is the character, and she keeps watering a seed despite the dry soil and doubts from others.
- Identify the key symbol in the story. The tiny seed represents hope and Maya's connection to her grandmother.
- Analyze the interaction between the character and the event. Maya faces a conflict (the dry soil and people's doubts), but she chooses to stay dedicated and patient.
- Connect the symbol's change to the theme. The sprout breaking through the dry soil shows that persistence pays off. Therefore, the theme is: 'With determination and hope, we can overcome difficult environments.'
