Speaking & presenting

Grade 9 · English Language Arts · Free lesson

Hey there! Ready to become a powerful speaker? Today, we will learn how to win over an audience using stories, comparisons, and eye contact.

When you want to advocate a position, you need to convince your audience to care. Just stating facts is not enough. You can use personal stories, smart comparisons, and pictures to make your ideas stick in their minds.

study

An analogy is a comparison that helps explain a complex idea. For example, you can compare a busy school hallway to a crowded highway. This helps your audience instantly picture the chaos and understand your point.

Analogy: Hallway = Highway

To truly connect, you must use eye contact. Looking at your audience builds trust and keeps them engaged. Think of your eyes as a bridge that carries your message directly to each person.

✏️ Worked example

Imagine you want to convince the school principal to start a recycling program. How do you advocate for this position using an analogy and eye contact?

  1. First, identify your main position: The school needs a recycling program to reduce waste.
  2. Next, create a simple analogy: Compare the school's trash bin to a giant, growing monster that eats our future resources.
  3. Then, plan a short anecdote or illustration: Mention how much paper we throw away in just one math class.
  4. Finally, practice your delivery: Look directly at the principal when you say the analogy, holding their eye contact for three seconds to show you are serious.
