To truly understand world literature, we analyze the historical context. This means we look at when and where a story was written to understand why the characters act the way they do.
By comparing American, British, and world literature, we find universal themes. A theme like 'the journey home' appears in ancient Greek epics, classic British novels, and modern American poetry.
Let's compare a theme in two different texts. We have a 19th-century British poem about industrial cities and a modern African short story about moving to a big city. How do we find and analyze their shared theme?
- Identify the main topic of both texts. In this case, both authors are writing about moving into or living in busy, crowded cities.
- Look for the emotional response of the characters. The British poet feels lonely among crowds, and the African story character feels confused by the fast pace.
- Find the shared message or theme. Both texts express the theme that rapid urban growth can make individuals feel isolated or disconnected from others.
- Analyze how their cultures affect this theme. The British poem uses images of coal smoke, while the African story uses images of dry heat and traffic.
- State your conclusion. Although written in different centuries and countries, both texts show that modern city life can feel overwhelming to a newcomer.
