To see how a country's population is changing, geographers use a tool called a population pyramid. This graph shows the age and gender of a population, helping us spot growth trends. A wide base means many young children are being born, which points to rapid growth ahead.
Global population trends show that humanity is growing overall, but not at the same rate everywhere. Most growth is happening in developing nations, while many wealthy nations have flat or shrinking populations. This shifts where the world's resources and cities are concentrated.
Analyze a population pyramid for Country X. The pyramid has a very wide base at the bottom (ages 0-4) and gets extremely narrow very quickly at the top. Explain what this shape tells us about Country X's birth rates, death rates, and future population growth.
- Step 1: Look at the base of the pyramid. A wide base means there is a very large number of young children, which shows a high birth rate.
- Step 2: Look at how the pyramid narrows. Because the sides slope inward quickly as age increases, it indicates a high death rate across different age groups.
- Step 3: Combine these clues to evaluate the trend. High birth rates paired with high death rates mean the country is likely in an early stage of development.
- Step 4: Predict the future growth. Since the youngest groups are so large, the population is set to grow rapidly as those children grow up to have families of their own.
