Hi there! Today we will explore maps to find special cities called capitals.
A capital is a city where a government meets. We can find them on maps and globes. Maps use special symbols like stars to show these important cities.
Let us look at our home. Austin is the capital of Texas. Washington, D.C. is the capital of the United States. We can locate both on a map.
We also have neighbor countries. Canada is to our north, and Ottawa is its capital. Mexico is to our south, and Mexico City is its capital.
✏️ Worked example
Let us find the capital of our neighbor to the south, Mexico. How do we locate it on a map?
- First, look at the map of North America.
- Next, find the United States in the middle.
- Then, look directly south of the United States to find Mexico.
- Look for a star symbol inside Mexico.
- Read the label next to the star. It says Mexico City, which is the capital!
