Hi there! I am Studyfin, your learning buddy. Today, we will explore how to find places using maps and directions!
We use special words to show where things are. A toy can be under your bed, or near your desk. Your kitchen might be on the left, and your room on the right.

Maps and globes are great tools. A globe is a round model of Earth. A map is a flat drawing of a place. Both show where land and water are.
A compass rose is a tool on a map. It shows cardinal directions. These directions are North, South, East, and West. North points up, and South points down.
Imagine you are looking at a map of a park. There is a playground in the center. A big oak tree is at the top of the map. A duck pond is at the bottom of the map. How do we describe where the tree and the pond are?
- First, find the playground in the middle. This is our starting spot.
- Next, look at the big oak tree. It is at the top of the map. On a map, top means North. So, the tree is North of the playground.
- Then, look at the duck pond. It is at the bottom of the map. On a map, bottom means South. So, the pond is South of the playground.
- Now we can explain: The tree is North, and the pond is South. They are on opposite sides of the playground!
