Compass & cardinal directions

Grade 3 · Geography · Free lesson

Hi there! I am Studyfin, your learning buddy. Today, we will explore how to find places using maps and directions!

We use special words to show where things are. A toy can be under your bed, or near your desk. Your kitchen might be on the left, and your room on the right.

Maps and globes are great tools. A globe is a round model of Earth. A map is a flat drawing of a place. Both show where land and water are.

Our Round Globe

A compass rose is a tool on a map. It shows cardinal directions. These directions are North, South, East, and West. North points up, and South points down.

✏️ Worked example

Imagine you are looking at a map of a park. There is a playground in the center. A big oak tree is at the top of the map. A duck pond is at the bottom of the map. How do we describe where the tree and the pond are?

  1. First, find the playground in the middle. This is our starting spot.
  2. Next, look at the big oak tree. It is at the top of the map. On a map, top means North. So, the tree is North of the playground.
  3. Then, look at the duck pond. It is at the bottom of the map. On a map, bottom means South. So, the pond is South of the playground.
  4. Now we can explain: The tree is North, and the pond is South. They are on opposite sides of the playground!
