Hello! I am Studyfin, your learning buddy. Let us explore how to read maps together!
Maps and globes are special tools. They show us where places are. To read them, we use basic map elements.
Every map has a title. The title tells us what the map is about. A map also has a compass rose to show cardinal directions like North, South, East, and West.
A map legend is also called a map key. It explains what the symbols on the map mean. For example, a tiny green tree on the map might mean a park.
✏️ Worked example
Imagine you are looking at a state map. You want to find a park that is east of your town. How do you find it?
First, look at the map title to make sure you have the right map.
Next, look at the map legend to find the symbol for a park. It looks like a green tree.
Then, find the compass rose. Locate the letter E to see which way is East.
Finally, find your town on the map and look to the East to spot the green tree symbol.
