Our Earth is full of beautiful shapes called landforms. Mountains are super tall landforms made of rock. Rivers are long paths of fresh water that flow across the land.
We can find these landforms on maps and globes. A globe is a round model of Earth. It shows seven huge pieces of land called continents and five giant oceans of salty water.
Water always flows downhill. Rain and melted snow on high mountains run down to make fast rivers. These rivers carry fresh water all the way to the flat land below.
Let us think like a geographer! Look at a map of North America. You see a blue line starting in the high Rocky Mountains and going to the ocean. How can you explain where the water in this river comes from and where it is going?
- First, identify the start. The blue line starts high up in the Rocky Mountains.
- Next, think about the weather. High mountains get cold snow and rain.
- Then, explain the movement. The snow melts and turns into water. Gravity pulls this water down the steep mountain slope.
- Finally, identify the end. The water flows through the river path until it reaches the flat land and empties into the ocean.
