Hi! Let's explore our big, beautiful world together today!
Our Earth has large areas of land and water. A map shows us where these places are located.

The seven huge blocks of land are called continents. Earth also has five giant bodies of salt water called oceans.
We can compare a continent to an ocean. A continent is dry land you can walk on. An ocean is deep water you can sail across.
✏️ Worked example
How can you tell if a spot on a map is a continent or an ocean?
- Step 1: Look at the color on the map key.
- Step 2: Check if the spot is green or brown for land.
- Step 3: If it is land, it is a continent.
- Step 4: Check if the spot is blue for water.
- Step 5: If it is large blue water, it is an ocean!
