The Earth is a giant ball that spins around. As it spins, the sun shines on different parts of our world. When your town faces the sun, it is daytime for you.
Because the Earth spins, it cannot be daytime everywhere at once. When you wake up in the morning, children on the other side of the world are going to bed. We use time zones so that all the clocks in one big area show the same time, and so the sun is somewhere high in the sky around the middle of the day.
We divide the world into 24 different time zones. Each zone is like a long strip from the top of the Earth to the bottom. When you travel to the next zone to the east, you add one hour to your clock.
Leo lives in Sunny Town. His cousin Mia lives in Star City, which is exactly two time zones to the east. If it is 4:00 PM at Leo's house, what time is it at Mia's house?
- First, find where Leo lives. His time is 4:00 PM.
- Next, look at which way we need to go. Mia lives to the east.
- Remember the rule: when we go east, time gets later. We must add hours!
- Count the time zones between them. Mia is two zones to the east, so we add 2 hours.
- Add the hours to Leo's time: 4:00 PM + 2 hours = 6:00 PM.
- So, when it is 4:00 PM at Leo's house, it is 6:00 PM at Mia's house!
