Maps show us where we live. We can find our local community, our big state of Texas, and the United States. We can also see Canada to the north and Mexico to the south.
Every state has a capital city. This is where leaders make laws. Austin is the capital of Texas. Washington, D.C. is the capital of the whole United States.
A star symbol on a map shows a capital city. A dot usually shows a normal city. We can compare these symbols to find capitals quickly.

Let us practice finding the capital of Texas on a map. Follow these steps to locate Austin.
First, look at the map of the United States.
Next, find the large state in the south. That is Texas.
Then, look inside Texas for a star symbol.
Last, read the name next to the star. It says Austin. Austin is the capital of Texas!
