Biomes

Grade 4 · Geography · Free lesson

Hi there! I am Studyfin, your learning buddy. Today we will explore biomes, which are the giant homes of our planet!

A biome is a very large area on Earth. It has its own special weather, plants, and animals. The weather tells us how hot or wet a biome is.

Let us look at the sandy desert biome. Deserts get very little rain, so they are dry. Plants like cacti store water to survive the hot sun.

The Dry Desert

Now, think about the rainy forest biome. Forests get lots of rain, so they are very wet. Tall trees reach up to catch the bright sunlight.

✏️ Worked example

We want to find out which biome a polar bear lives in. Let us look at its thick white fur and layer of fat to solve this mystery step by step!

  1. First, we look at the animal's traits. The polar bear has thick white fur and lots of warm fat.
  2. Next, we think about what these traits are for. Thick fur and fat keep an animal warm in very cold places.
  3. Then, we match this to a biome. The tundra is a biome that is always cold, snowy, and icy.
  4. Finally, we share our answer! The polar bear lives in the cold tundra biome because its warm fur helps it survive the ice.
