Let us locate our home. We can find our local community on a map of Texas. Texas is a large state with its capital city in Austin.

Next, we look at the whole United States. Its capital is Washington, D.C. The United States has two close neighbors: Canada is to the north, and Mexico is to the south.

✏️ Worked example

Let us practice finding places step-by-step! Imagine you want to locate Washington, D.C., and its neighbor Canada on a map. How do you do this?

  1. First, look at the giant land shape in the middle of North America. This is the United States.
  2. Second, look directly above the United States to the north. Label this large country Canada.
  3. Third, look at the east side of the United States near the ocean.
  4. Fourth, find the special star symbol on the east coast. This star marks Washington, D.C., which is the capital of the United States!
