We use special words to talk about where things are. These words are called spatial terms. For example, your desk might be near the door, or your backpack might be under your chair. We also use left and right to help people find things.
To find places that are far away, we use geographic tools. A map is a flat drawing of a place. A globe is a round ball that looks just like the Earth! Both tools help us see where countries and oceans are.
A compass rose is a tool on a map. It shows the cardinal directions: North, South, East, and West. North points up, South points down, East points right, and West points left. You can remember them with the phrase: Never Eat Soggy Waffles!
Let us practice using our map skills! Imagine you are looking at a park map. The playground is in the middle. The pond is at the top of the map. The sandbox is on the left side. Let us figure out the relative location of these places using spatial terms and cardinal directions.
- First, find the playground in the middle. This is our starting point.
- Next, look at the pond. It is at the top of the map. In spatial terms, the pond is over the playground. Using cardinal directions, the pond is North of the playground.
- Now, look at the sandbox. It is on the left side of the map. In spatial terms, the sandbox is near the playground on the left. Using cardinal directions, the sandbox is West of the playground.
- Awesome job! You just used both spatial terms and cardinal directions to read a map like a pro!
