Hi! I am Studyfin, your helper. Today we will explore the cool layers inside our own planet Earth!
Think of the Earth as a giant peach. It has a thin skin, a juicy middle, and a hard pit in the center.
The outside layer is called the crust. It is a thin, rocky shell where we live and build our homes.
Under the crust lies the hot mantle. It is the thickest layer, made of heavy, warm rock that moves very slowly.
Deep in the center is the core. It has a liquid outer part and a solid metal inner part that is as hot as the sun!
✏️ Worked example
Imagine you are digging a deep hole straight down to the center of the Earth. List the three layers in order, from the outside where you start, to the very center.
First, your shovel digs through the dirt and hard rock. This topmost layer is the crust.
Next, you pass through the crust and enter a very thick, hot layer of rock. This middle layer is the mantle.
Finally, you reach the super-hot metal center of the Earth. This deepest layer is the core.
So, the order from outside to inside is: Crust, Mantle, and Core!
