Imagine Earth has a grid of lines drawn on it. These lines help us find exact locations. They are called latitude and longitude.
Latitude lines run east and west like belts. They measure how far north or south you are from the Equator. The Equator is the middle line that splits Earth into top and bottom halves.
Longitude lines run north and south from the top of Earth to the bottom. They look like shiny orange slices! They measure how far east or west you are from the Prime Meridian.
When these lines cross, they make a grid. We can find any spot on Earth by seeing where its latitude line meets its longitude line. It works just like a giant game of Tic-Tac-Toe!
Let us practice together! Imagine you are a pirate trying to find a treasure chest. The map says the treasure is at 30 degrees North latitude and 60 degrees West longitude. How do you find it?
- First, find the Equator, which is the middle line of latitude.
- Next, look north of the Equator. Count up to the line marked 30 degrees North.
- Now, find the Prime Meridian, which is the middle line of longitude.
- Next, look west of the Prime Meridian. Count over to the line marked 60 degrees West.
- Finally, follow both lines with your fingers. The exact spot where the 30 degrees North line crosses the 60 degrees West line is where you dig for treasure!
