Hi there! I am Studyfin, your helper. Today we will learn how to read maps like a pro!
A map is a flat drawing of a real place. It uses three main tools to help us find our way. These are the title, the cardinal directions, and the legend.
The map title tells us what the map is about. A compass rose shows us the cardinal directions: North, South, East, and West.
A legend is also called a map key. It explains what the symbols on the map mean, like trees for parks or tents for campsites.
✏️ Worked example
Look at a map of Texas. Find the symbol that looks like a little blue plane. How do you find out what it means?
First, read the map title to make sure you are looking at the right map.
Next, find the box called the legend or map key, usually in a corner.
Then, look down the list of symbols inside the legend to find the blue plane.
Finally, read the word next to the blue plane. The word says 'Airport'. Now you know!
