Our big, beautiful planet Earth is covered in water and land. Large land areas are called continents, and huge bodies of water are called oceans. We can find all seven continents and five oceans on maps and globes.
Earth has seven huge pieces of land called continents. Let us look at how they are spread out across the globe. Some are in the north, some are in the south, and they all have unique shapes.
Water covers most of our planet in five giant oceans. Between the land, water flows in rivers, and tall mountains rise up high into the clouds. We can identify these shapes easily on a map.
Let us practice how to identify a major landform and a body of water on a map. Imagine you are looking at a map of North America. How do you find and explain the difference between the Rocky Mountains and the Mississippi River?
- First, look at the map key or symbols. Mountains usually look like brown or purple triangles, and rivers look like blue wavy lines.
- Second, find the tall, pointy symbols in the west. These are the Rocky Mountains, which are high, rocky landforms.
- Third, find the long blue line running down the middle of the land. This is the Mississippi River, which is a flowing body of water.
- Finally, compare them! You can explain that mountains are high, solid land, while rivers are wet, moving water.
