Maps show us where places are. We can locate our local community inside Texas. Texas is one state inside the United States.
Every state has a state capital where its government works. Austin is the capital of Texas. Washington, D.C. is the capital of the whole United States.
Two countries border the United States. Canada touches the United States to the north. Mexico borders the United States to the south.
We compare map places by looking at directions. Canada is north of the United States. Mexico is south of Texas.

Find the United States in the center of the map.
Look directly north of the United States to locate Canada.
Look directly south of the United States to locate Mexico.
Find Texas along the southern border next to Mexico.
