Every country has a special city called a capital. The capital is where the leaders of the government work.
Let us locate our local community, Texas, and the United States. Austin is the capital of Texas, and Washington, D.C. is the capital of the United States.
We also have neighbor countries next to us. Canada is to our north, and Mexico is to our south. Ottawa is Canada's capital, and Mexico City is Mexico's capital.
✏️ Worked example
Imagine you are looking at a map of North America. How do you find and compare the capitals of the United States and its southern neighbor, Mexico?
- First, find the United States in the middle of the map.
- Look for the star symbol on the east coast of the United States to locate Washington, D.C.
- Next, look south of the United States border to find the country of Mexico.
- Find the star symbol inside Mexico to locate its capital, Mexico City.
- Compare them: Washington, D.C. is in the north, and Mexico City is further south.
