Climate zones

Grade 5 · Geography · Free lesson

Hi there! I'm Studyfin, your friendly study buddy. Today, we will explore the different climate zones on Earth!

Our planet has different climate zones. A climate zone is a large area with a certain pattern of weather. We look at temperature, rain, and wind to find these patterns.

Earth has three main climate zones. The tropical zone is hot and near the equator. The polar zones are cold and near the poles. The temperate zones are in between and have warm summers and cool winters.

TROPICAL POLAR POLAR

We can compare these zones by looking at their landforms, plants, and natural hazards. For example, tropical zones have lush rainforests but can get huge hurricanes. Polar zones have flat, icy tundra and face freezing blizzards.

Tropical Zone Polar Zone
✏️ Worked example

Compare the tropical zone and the polar zone. Find one similarity and one difference in their physical environments.

  1. Step 1: Look at the temperature. The tropical zone is very hot all year. The polar zone is extremely cold.
  2. Step 2: Look at natural hazards. The tropical zone has hazards like tropical storms. The polar zone has hazards like extreme snowstorms.
  3. Step 3: Find a similarity. Both zones have extreme weather hazards that challenge the people and animals living there.
  4. Step 4: Find a difference. The tropical zone is warm and has lots of liquid water. The polar zone is cold and has mostly frozen ice.
