Did you know we live on a giant puzzle? The Earth is made of three main layers: the crust, the mantle, and the core. Each layer has its own special job and temperature.
The crust is the thin outer layer where we walk, build houses, and plant trees. It is made of solid rock, and it is the coolest layer of all.
Under the crust lies the hot mantle. It is the thickest layer, made of super-hot rock that flows slowly like warm, gooey caramel.
Deep in the center is the core, which is split into a liquid outer core and a solid inner core. It is as hot as the surface of the sun and made of heavy metals like iron.
Imagine you are building a clay model of the Earth. Explain how you would layer your model from the inside out to show the correct order of Earth's structure.
- First, roll a small, solid yellow clay ball to represent the hot, solid inner core.
- Second, wrap a layer of orange clay around the yellow ball to show the liquid outer core.
- Third, add a very thick layer of red clay around that to represent the thick, warm mantle.
- Finally, roll out a very thin sheet of blue and green clay to wrap the outside, representing the thin crust we live on.
