Imagine the Earth is covered in a giant grid, just like a math graph. We use two special sets of lines to find exact places. These lines are called latitude and longitude.
Latitude lines run east and west, like belts around the Earth. The middle belt is the Equator. We measure latitude in degrees north or south of this middle line.
Longitude lines run from the very top of the Earth to the very bottom. They connect the North Pole and the South Pole. The main line is called the Prime Meridian.
To find a place, we see where these two lines cross. We always write the latitude number first, then the longitude number. It is just like reading a map coordinate!
Let's find a hidden treasure on our map! The clues say the treasure is at 30 degrees North (latitude) and 60 degrees West (longitude). How do we find it?
- First, look at the Equator in the middle of the map.
- Second, move up north (above the Equator) to find the line labeled 30 degrees North.
- Third, look at the Prime Meridian line.
- Fourth, move west (to the left) to find the line labeled 60 degrees West.
- Fifth, follow both lines until they cross. The spot where they meet is where the treasure is buried!
