Our Earth is covered in beautiful shapes called landforms. Mountains are super tall landforms with steep sides, while rivers are long paths of flowing freshwater.
We can find these features on maps and globes. A globe is a round model of Earth that shows seven huge land areas called continents and five giant oceans.
Rivers always flow downhill because of gravity. They start high up in the mountains and travel across the continents until they reach the salty ocean.
Let us practice using our thinking skills! Imagine you have a flat world map. Walk through the steps to identify and compare a major mountain range and a major river.
- First, look at the map key or legend to find the symbols for mountains (usually brown triangles) and rivers (blue lines).
- Second, locate the continent of South America on your map.
- Third, point to the long chain of brown triangles on the west coast to identify the Andes Mountains.
- Fourth, find the blue line winding across the green area nearby to identify the Amazon River.
- Finally, compare them: explain how the Andes Mountains are high, dry peaks, while the Amazon River is a low, wet path of flowing water.
