Think of Earth as a giant piece of fruit. It has a thin skin on the outside, a thick juicy middle, and a hard seed at the very center. Scientists group these parts into three main layers: the crust, the mantle, and the core.

The crust is the cold, rocky outer layer where we live. It is very thin compared to the rest of Earth, like the shell of an egg. Under the oceans, the crust is made of heavy basalt rock, while the land we walk on is made of lighter granite rock.
Below the crust lies the mantle. It is a super-hot, thick layer of rock that acts like warm, gooey clay. Because it is so hot, this rock slowly moves and flows in giant circles, carrying the cool crust along with it.
At the very center of Earth is the core, which is made of heavy metals like iron and nickel. The core has two parts: a liquid outer core that flows like melted wax, and a solid inner core that is squeezed tight by heavy pressure.
Imagine you are a scientist analyzing a mystery sample from deep inside the Earth. The sample is extremely hot, solid, and made mostly of iron. Which layer did this sample come from?
- Identify the clues: The sample is extremely hot, it is solid, and it is made of iron.
- Compare the layers: The crust is cool and made of rock, so it cannot be the crust.
- Look at the mantle: The mantle is made of hot rock, but our sample is made of metal (iron).
- Look at the core: The core is made of iron and nickel. It has two parts: a liquid outer core and a solid inner core.
- Match the state of matter: Since our sample is solid metal, it must have come from the solid inner core!
