Hi there! I am Studyfin, your geography tutor. Today, we will explore how humans and the Earth's climate shape each other!

Humans depend on, adapt to, and modify the environment. We depend on rivers for drinking water. We adapt to cold winters by wearing heavy coats. We modify the land by building dams and roads to make our lives easier.

Our actions can change the climate, which is how weather behaves over long periods. When we burn fuels for energy, we release gases that trap heat. This warming changes our resources and forces us to build new, stronger technology and transportation systems.

Extreme weather events like El Niño have massive consequences. El Niño is a natural warming of the Pacific Ocean. It changes global wind patterns, causing heavy rains and floods in some areas while bringing severe droughts to others.

Let's practice our geographic thinking! Imagine a coastal city that experiences rising sea levels due to climate change. Walk through how the city must adapt its infrastructure and how this relates to human modification.

  1. Step 1: Identify the environmental change. In this scenario, the sea level is rising, which threatens to flood the coastal city.
  2. Step 2: Analyze the impact on infrastructure. Roads, homes, and water pipes near the coast are at risk of being damaged by saltwater.
  3. Step 3: Compare adaptation and modification. The city can adapt by building houses on high stilts (fitting into nature), or they can modify the environment by building a massive concrete sea wall to block the water.
  4. Step 4: Assess the consequences. Building a sea wall (modification) protects the city but might destroy local coastal ecosystems. Moving homes inland (adaptation) keeps people safe but costs a lot of money.
