Think of the Earth like a giant peach. It has a thin skin on the outside, a thick, juicy middle, and a hard seed right in the center.
The outermost layer is the crust. This is the thin, rocky shell we live on, and it holds all of our oceans and continents.
Under the crust lies the mantle. It is a huge, hot layer of rock that acts like warm, slow-moving plastic because of the intense heat.
At the very center is the core, which has two parts. The outer core is liquid metal, while the inner core is a solid, super-hot metal ball.
Imagine you are a scientist analyzing a mystery sample from deep inside Earth. It is extremely hot, solid metal under immense pressure. Which specific layer did this sample come from?
- First, look at the material. The sample is made of metal, which tells us it must come from the core, not the rocky crust or mantle.
- Next, check the state of matter. The sample is solid, not liquid.
- Now, compare the two parts of the core. The outer core is liquid metal, but the inner core is solid metal due to extreme pressure.
- Therefore, the sample must have come from the inner core!
