Hey there! Have you ever wondered how maps find any exact spot on Earth? Let's explore the invisible grid that wraps around our planet!

Imagine Earth is a giant ball. To find places easily, we draw imaginary lines on it. These lines form a grid, just like a giant map in a video game.

Latitude lines run east to west, wrapping around Earth like belts. The middle belt is called the Equator. These lines measure how far north or south you are from that middle line.

EQUATOR (0°) LATITUDE = FLAT Lines

Longitude lines run from the North Pole to the South Pole. The main starting line is the Prime Meridian. These lines measure how far east or west you are from that center line.

When we put latitude and longitude lines together, they cross each other. Every single point on Earth has its own address made of two numbers, called coordinates.

✏️ Worked example

A ship is lost at sea. Its captain reports their position as 30 degrees North and 60 degrees West. Let's break down how a rescue team finds this exact spot on a map step by step.

  1. First, look at the first number: 30 degrees North. This is the latitude. Since it says 'North', start at the Equator and move up (north) to the line marked 30.
  2. Next, look at the second number: 60 degrees West. This is the longitude. Start at the Prime Meridian and move left (west) to the line marked 60.
  3. Finally, trace both of these lines with your fingers. Find the exact point where the 30 degrees North line crosses the 60 degrees West line.
  4. The point where they meet is the ship's precise coordinate location! The rescue team now knows exactly where to steer their boat.
