People do not just live anywhere. They settle near physical features like fresh water, flat land, and mild weather. These features help cities grow, while harsh deserts or tall mountains keep population sizes small.
World population has grown quickly over time, but people are not spread out evenly. Most people crowd into giant cities, while huge areas of land remain nearly empty because of poor soil or extreme cold.
Geographers use a tool called a population pyramid to analyze populations. This double-sided bar graph shows the age and gender of a country's people, helping us see if a population is growing fast or shrinking.
Let us look at a country with a pyramid that has a very wide bottom and a tiny, pointed top. What does this shape tell us about the country's population growth?
- Find the widest part of the pyramid, which is at the very bottom where the youngest children are grouped.
- Notice that the bars get much shorter as you move up toward the older age groups at the top.
- Explain what this means: a wide base shows that many babies are being born every year.
- Analyze the tiny top, which shows that fewer people live to old age.
- Conclude that this triangle shape means the population is growing very rapidly.
